United Ways of Tennessee's heart goes out to the victims of the recent floods. Here are resources for those needing help or wanting to give help:
Contact 2-1-1, our state's easy-to-remember telephone number that connects people with important community services and volunteer opportunities. United Ways of Tennessee and the Tennessee Alliance of Information and Referral systems worked together to expand 2-1-1, and it is now available to provide referrals to a broad range of health and human services in all Tennessee counties-and is a tremendous resource in times of disaster. You may also access information by linking to www.211tn.org.
Contact FEMA at 1-800-621-3362 or www.fema.gov. The following information will be asked for when you apply:
the address of damaged property
names of people living in the household
a description of the damages
insurance information
social security number
a phone number you may be reached at
an address where you receive mail
When you apply, you will be given a FEMA application number. Please keep this number for future reference as you will need it each time you contact FEMA. Only damages that are not covered by insurance can qualify for FEMA disaster assistance. Additionally, please note:
When contacting FEMA to file a claim, either call OR go online--DO NOT DO BOTH. If you do both, FEMA will send the claim to an error file and victim will be kicked out ofsystem.
When flood victims are dealing with FEMA, document all damage. If possible, have before and after photos. Keep duplicate copy of information at home.
Tennessee's Department of Human Services is offering assistance to low income individuals and families impacted by the flooding. For more information, click on this link: http://www.state.tn.us/humanserv/flood/flood.html

If you wish to give monetarily, we encourage you to direct your gifts to established nonprofit agencies to avoid being "scammed" by criminals who have pretended to create nonprofits addressing a one-time cause.
