Volunteer Review Team (VRT) Member Job Description

 

Mission Statement

United Way of Metropolitan Nashville (UWMN) seeks to bring people and organizations together to create a community where individuals, families, and neighborhoods thrive.

Position Purpose / Objectives

Volunteer Review Team (VRT) members are UWMN volunteers whose responsibilities include: reviewing investment proposals, conducting telephone and personal interviews, making investment recommendations, and monitoring programs on a quarterly basis.

Qualifications of Position and General Expectations

  1. The VRT members are volunteers recruited from companies, community organizations, and government agencies.
  2. The VRT member must have a commitment to the stewardship of the dollars given by donors to UWMN.
  3. Professional or volunteer experience in health and human service is preferred.
  4. The VRT member adheres to UWMN’s Volunteer Agreement regarding Confidentiality and Conflict of Interest.
  5. The VRT member adheres to UWMN’s Code of Ethics and Conduct as it pertains to volunteers.

Roles and Responsibilities

  1. The VRT volunteer attends OBI training in order to understand and execute all of the core processes as detailed below.
  2. Before the beginning of each multi-year investment cycle, the VRT is responsible for conducting the Outcome Based Investment (OBI) Due Diligence process, during which the VRT determines which programs will receive an investment and at what level.
    • Each volunteer reviews 3-6 Target Plans; each volunteer is the primary reviewer for no more than 3 but will serve as secondary reviewer for up to 3 additional Target Plans.
    • Each volunteer conducts Telephone interviews for no more than 3 Target Plans.
    • Each volunteer conducts Personal interviews for no more than 6 Target Plans.
  3. The VRT annually determines which programs will receive an investment and at what level.
  4. Each volunteer annually negotiates the investment contract with assigned programs.
  5. Each volunteer monitors assigned programs through quarterly contacts and reports results to UWMN staff and the VRT.
  6. Each volunteer commits to keep abreast of assigned programs by conducting at least one program site visit and at least one chart audit per year.

 Time Commitment and Term Limit  

  1.  Each member is asked to serve a two-year term.  Volunteers may be asked to serve an additional two-year term.
  2. Training sessions are required in the areas of Due Diligence and Quarterly Monitoring. The time commitment for training is approximately 6-8 hours over the first two years.
  3. The Due Diligence process takes approximately 25 hours before the beginning of a multi-year investment cycle.  This includes review of program proposals, telephone and personal interviews and development of investment recommendations with the VRT.
  4. The annual program review within a multi-year cycle typically requires 5-10 hours.
  5. Program visits/phone calls are required to monitor progress in reaching outcomes.  The time commitment for monitoring is approximately 5-10 hours per year.
  6. Total time commitment is 40-50 hours for the Due Diligence year and less than half that during the intervening years.
