Community Matters

A message from United Way of Metropolitan Nashville.

Supplying Hope for a New Day

Throughout the year we strive to help donors understand how they are making a difference. We use a lot of facts and figures and real life success stories that pull at the heartstrings. But sometimes all it takes is an unexpected voice to give us a fresh perspective on the simple goodness of helping others.

Anna Jernigan, a seventh grader at Head Middle School, had already been wanting to do her part to make a difference when she saw a story on the news about United Way’s Day of Action. It was a perfect fit with this compassionate young lady’s goals. So she asked for her birthday money early in order to buy items and she and her mom delivered a huge box of personal care kits (that Anna had assembled herself) to our offices last week.

We asked Anna to share with us what made her want to be a part of the personal care item supply drive. This is what she told us:

“I wanted to donate these packages because I am very lucky, and there are some people who are less fortunate than I am. I thought that this would be a great opportunity to share God's love with others. This little reminder shows how we should thank God every day for the things he provides for us.”

Sincerely,
Anna Jernigan

Out of the mouths of children…

Thank you, Anna, for reminding us that it’s up to those of us who can to help those who are struggling.  And that giving from the heart — whether it’s your time, your talents, or your treasure — benefits not only the recipient, but the giver as well.
