United Ways of Tennessee is focussing it's collective community impact work statewide on the following three areas:
Education: Improving third grade reading proficiency. In fact, we just launched a partnership with the Tennessee School Boards Association focused on this goal. United Way has developed evidence-based initiatives that are generating measurable outcomes, improving reading scores in many Tennessee communities. Together with our school boards, we will be able to offer tools, resources, and additional connections with the corporate and non profit sectors statewide. The catalyst for this movement comes from research that has shown that for every 50 children who do not learn to read in kindergartern, 44 are struggling to read in third grade. Up through third grade, children are learning to read, but after, they need to read to learn. Children without reading proficiency by third grade are unlikely to graduate from high school.
Income: United way fosters financial literacy, education, and Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) to optimize the financial stability of families in Tennessee. Link here to learn more and to find helpful resources:
Health: United Way encourages Tennesseans to be more physically active, to eat healthier, and to not use tobacco. Link below to Healthier TN to learn more!
